The Black House tells the story of a middle aged couple, the Mundays, recently returned from nearly a decade in Africa where the husband was an anthropologist studying a tribe called the Bwamba. They've returned, ostensibly because of his heart trouble, to a dreary cottage in a small and not terribly friendly town where he can work on his book/5(2). Get this from a library! The black house. The Black House by Peter May is a Quercus publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

The Isle of Lewis is a place Fin Macleod thought he would never have to visit again/5. The Black House is written by a master of the craft. Unfortunately, May has created something between a modern day murder mystery and a fictional autobiography of Inspector Fin Macleod who was born and reared on the Island of Lewis and is now back on the island to investigate a possible copy-cat killing of an old enemy/5(K).

The book cover says it all. This story is as eerie as the book cover. A very bleak and dark storyline that centers more on the back story of the main character's childhood growing up on Lewis Island that you sometimes forget a murder is supposed to be solved.

(This review was originally published in the Washington Post in ) Black House is a novel of slippage. We learn about slippage (a secondary definition of which, we are told, helpfully, in the text, is the feeling that things in general have just gotten, or will shortly get, worse) at the beginning of the book as we travel, invisibly through the town of French Landing, Wisconsin, early in 4/5.

The Blackhouse is the first novel of The Lewis Trilogy by the Scottish writer Peter May.A suspense thriller, the action takes place mostly on the remote and weather-beaten Isle of Lewis off the coast of northern Scotland.

He has no memory of his adventures as a twelve-year-old. " The Black House" scores points on many levels and Peter May is an accomplished storyteller.

Somewhere in the Black House is a presence so intrusive it must be a ghost. Alfred Munday, an anthropologist, and his wife, Emma, have left Africa after a long period in a tiny, remote village. They arrive in an English village deep in the Dorset countryside and almost immediately sense the haunting presence of a lovely woman neither of them can name.4/5(2).
